How the math works

Nearly every "comfortable salary" figure you'll see for U.S. cities traces back to one budgeting benchmark: housing should cost no more than 30% of your gross income. This calculator inverts the rule โ€” starting from a ZIP's actual median rent (real Census data, not listing-site prices), we work out the income at which that rent equals 30% of pay.

Family income uses a 1.85ร— multiplier on the single-adult figure, consistent with MIT Living Wage Calculator research and other cost-of-living studies for a household of three to four with one to two working adults. It accounts for larger housing needs, childcare, food, healthcare, and transportation for additional people.

Why ZIP-level beats city-wide numbers

Most viral "salary needed to live in [city]" headlines use a single metro-wide average โ€” but rent inside one city can vary by more than 2ร— between ZIP codes. A one-number-per-city figure is wrong almost everywhere: too high for most of the metro, too low for the neighborhoods people are usually asking about. This calculator uses the real number for your specific ZIP.
