Red Flag Warnings Explained: Reading Wildfire Weather Before the Smoke

Most disaster alerts tell you something has already happened — the quake struck, the river crested, the storm made landfall. A Red Flag Warning is different, and that difference is what makes it worth understanding: it's issued before anything is burning. It's the National Weather Service saying that if a fire starts today, for any reason, conditions will help it spread fast. It's the rare alert you can act on while there's still nothing to see.

What triggers a Red Flag Warning

Forecasters issue one when three ingredients line up — the "fire weather triangle" of conditions that turn a spark into a running fire:

The exact thresholds vary by region — what counts as dangerously dry in Louisiana differs from Nevada — which is why the warnings are issued by local NWS offices that know their territory. What to actually do during one

Red Flag Warnings ask something unusual of the public: not evacuation, not sheltering — just don't provide the spark. The overwhelming majority of U.S. wildfires are human-caused, and most of those ignitions are mundane:

Acreage is a footprint, not a forecast

A fire's size tells you where it's been, not where it's going. What matters more is the trend: a fire that grew from 500 to 8,000 acres overnight is telling you the weather is winning; a 40,000-acre fire that's barely moved in a week is a different story despite the bigger number. Containment is about the perimeter, not the flames

"30% contained" doesn't mean 30% of the fire is out. It means crews have built and hold control lines — cleared ground, retardant lines, natural barriers — around 30% of the fire's edge. Fire inside the perimeter may burn for weeks. That's normal and often intentional: interior fuel that burns out can't carry flames later. What containment tells you is how much of the fire's edge can still move somewhere new.
